Why Malaysians Get Hit By A Car? The Collective Triggers

Tharahni Kalaiselvan / 21/11/2019

Malaysians get hit by a car? Have you ever wondered why this happen? People walk and school children run side of the road to get around areas where there is easy access to public transportation.

While public transport can carry many more people and help to reduce traffic congestion, walking or running along the street may result in tragic accidents involving pedestrians. Such accidents may cause pedestrians to suffer serious injuries or death because they have no safety whatsoever between themselves and their car.

Who is the greatest risk?

On the 14th May 2019, The Star an English newspaper based in Malaysia published that Malaysia is the 3rd highest death rate from accidents. Road accidents including the pedestrians accidents (5.4%), have been Malaysia’s fourth most common cause of death.

While there is a chance that any pedestrian will be struck by a car, certain groups of people are at greater risk. Teenagers and young adults in emergency rooms in Malaysia are more likely to be treated for injuries than any other age group. If a car hit a pedestrian, children are at higher risk of dying. In Malaysia, this form of crash caused the deaths of children younger than 14 years of age. But, what exactly cause such accidents to happen?

Backing up your car.

Someone driving a car needs to back it up at some point. It can be when you park, leave a driveway, or just move a car. Driving in reverse can be challenging, even at a very slow speed.

Despite limited visibility, obstacles behind the driver are more difficult to perceive and avoid. Therefore, there is the risk of hurting somebody, even a kid, while backing up. Furthermore, pedestrians are at risk of being hit by a vehicle backing up. Such incidents are highly expected to be happen when there is a lot of traffic in parking lots.

Failing to stop or run in a red light.

Individuals can think of a lot of reasons to run a red light. But, one must be assured that it is risky and should stopped. A common cause of these devastating crashes are drivers who roll through a stop sign or intersection or fail to yield to the pedestrian who has the right of way. Because they are in a rush and feel anxious, the large majority of drivers run red lights. This is certainly understandable in our hurried world, but it also reflects a fundamental risk.

Is it worth a chance of a horrific car accident to arrive at a destination one or two minutes ago and actually dying? Ordinarily the answer is, no!. Some other drivers may run red lights because they are reckless and just don’t care about their own safety or the safety of others, or because they don’t think anyone is watching, and so why not? For no reason whatsoever, these people run risks, which is the height of recklessness.

Speeding

Speeding is also known as reckless driving. Pedestrians struck by speeding vehicles may sustain even more life-altering injuries or die as a result of the impact force. To tell the truth, excessive speed is not the only issue. Many people are likely to conclude that traveling 100 mph is foolishly reckless and will most likely lead to a devastating car accident. The issue is that it can be just as risky to exceed the speed limit by just 5 mph in the wrong place.

Take this example of a pedestrian accident caused by low or medium speed. A pedestrian walks through a crosswalk with a car coming at 30 mph. When the pedestrian is 45 feet away, if the driver stops, there will be enough space to stop without striking the pedestrian. Now, just increase the speed of the vehicle by 5 mph, and the situation completely changes. At 35 mph and 45 feet away from the pedestrian, when it hits the pedestrian, the car will travel at 18 mph. A 18 mph pedestrian accident can result in severe injury or even death.

Conclusion

Every driver should drive in a manner that protects himself and other vehicles, pedestrians and passengers from danger in a reasonable manner. Besides that, it is also important to get an insurance so you no need to spend excessively when an accident occurred.
