Useful Tips to Always Stay Safe During the Haze Season
Haze issue has always been Malaysia’s concern ever since the calamity started way back in September 1997 or best known as the Southeast Asian haze with the total costs of loss are estimated at US$9 billion, mainly due to health care and disruption of air travel and business activities. But that is not the end for this catastrophe though, since in 2005, a state of emergency was announced in Malaysia at Port Klang as the Air Pollution Index (API) went above the 500 level! And last but not least, according to a scientist from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies; Robert Field, the 2015 haze that resulted in over a month of haze in Malaysia was actually considered to be among the worst in history.
While everyone has the least expectation for the disaster to come again, here it comes, making an unwelcome comeback to the whole Southeast Asian especially Malaysia. Unless you have been living under the cave these last few weeks, you must have known or heard any news regarding the newly returned haze that happened to attack the West Malaysia badly this time. Well, since there is no guarantee that East Malaysia would be harmless, it is better for us to start practicing safety measures in order to protect ourselves from this hazy onslaught.
Stay Indoor During Haze Season
Whenever possible, try to stay indoors especially if you have kids. But, if you have to go outside, it is advisable to get all your tasks completed in one go since it is clearly one of the best ways to battle the health effects of haze when it is unavoidable to go outdoors. Shut the windows to help reduce the rate of haze particles entering the home. Also, do not forget to switch on the air conditioner if possible or use suitable air filters and air purifiers in order to lower the amount of dust particles and contaminants in the air inside your house.
Stay Hydrated to Combat the Haze
The thing that all of us hate about the arrival of haze is of course, it can annoyingly irritate the throat, causing it to be sore or dry as well as leading the victim to cough excessively. Thus, it is essential to drink up to flush away the toxins absorbed through the skin and lungs. Do not feel lazy to bring along a bottle of mineral water with you if you need to stay outdoor for a while. If you do not like the idea of drinking plain water all day, drink juice such as apples, papayas, coconut water and watermelon juice to stay cool. Other than that, add more fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins A and C in your daily meal intake in order to boost your immune system. Examples would be carrots, sweet potatoes and spinach that are known to protect your eyes and lungs from air pollution.
Wear A Mask to Protect Yourself from Haze
As we all know, mask and haze can never be separated from each other. Therefore, it is highly encouraged to put on a respiratory mask if you must go outdoors, especially when the PSI count is over 150. For your information, standard surgical masks cannot keep out fine particles. So, always choose the certified N95 mask which is designed to filter airborne particles and protect wearers from inhaling the haze particles. Adjust the mask to be properly fitted to your nose and mouth to ensure no leak upon wearing it.
Take Medication to Relieve Symptoms
During this crisis, do not overlook any symptoms, even if it simple. This is because haze can cause some adverse effects on your health including eye irritation, running or stuffy nose, throat irritation, headache or lung inflammation. In case you or any of your family members are experiencing respiratory, eye or other health issues, you might want to relieve them with eye drops or cough tablets and mixtures available at pharmacies. But it is better to consult first with your doctor if you are constantly exposed to irritants in the air you breathe so that it would disturb your daily activity.
