Within Ford, the Mach E has become a high-profile turnaround experiment. For Chief Executive Jim Hackett, the aggressive development and sleek interior of the Mach E is a long-awaited. This is the visible sign of the redesign of the product creation of the company.
According to Hackett, by increasing the “clock speed” of vehicle growth, cutting overlapping product architectures to just five out of 13 and expanding the company’s most profitable brands to new products. By doing this, Ford could take $20 billion out of a five-year 2018-2023 business strategy. Besides that, two previously contradictory priorities were set by the Mustang Mach E. First, the intention of the chairman to make Ford a pioneer in green cars and make the car manufacturer carbon neutral by 2030. Second, the Mustang’s personal affection and the groaning V-8 engine.
According to the chairman, they are really pushing the chips on the table with this vehicle. The automaker said it’s going to spend $11.5 billion to build hybrid and electric vehicles by 2022. Ford’s confidence in the Mach E and his willingness to challenge Tesla was reflected in the position that the company chose to disclose. A hangar for aircraft just a short walk from Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s SpaceX operations headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif. Besides that, Musk frequently uses SpaceX facilities to unveil Tesla’s new models, and now he planned his hybrid pickup truck debut somewhere in Los Angeles.
Experience with Mustang
Hacked discussed the electric SUV prototype with Executive Vice President Jim Farley. Instead of the original plan to use a modified version of an internal combustion engine car, the team developing the vehicle began using a new architecture design. According to the Ford executive, this is designed from the beginning as a battery electric vehicle. The iconic “shark head” front end and body dimensions of the Mustang muscle car were modified to a new skin.
A 15-person team put together a prototype for new dashboard technology and a display using a 15.5-inch (39 cm) diagonal screen in just 90 days. This group is called the Menlo Team. The name given on the basis of a reference to Menlo Park, New Jersey, laboratory of Thomas Edison. An empty Keurig coffee pod was used by a new screen paper model to represent a large control knob. The redesign is costing money. Yet, according to Ford’s product development chief Hau Thai-tang, the dedicated electric vehicle architecture will require a 25 percent to 30% manufacturing efficiency improvements to help offset costs. The final call to use the name of Mustang came from the top and wasn’t easily given.
Decisive change in the situation
The first Mustang released in 1964 was derived from a compact Falcon mainstream car. This is quickly turned into a success, well outselling the predictions of the company. With the economy in a recession in the early 1990s, a small group of Ford workers rebelled against a proposal to turn Mustang’s rear-wheel drive into a front-wheel drive car. This venture became a laboratory for increasing material engineering costs by putting members of various functions on the same team.
