10 Wacky Insurance Policies That You Didn’t Know Existed!

PolicyStreet / 12/09/2017

You may not think that knowing Heidi Klum’s legs were insured is an important fact, but someday down the road if you’re on a date and stumped for a conversation topic, you’ll thank your lucky stars you read this post. Here are 10 wacky insurance policies that actually exist!

1) Body Part Insurance

If you’re a celebrity, you can get away with a lot. This extends to insurance policies for specific body parts. Though it’s often rumoured, Jennifer Lopez has vehemently denied that her butt is insured. However, Heidi Klum can’t do the same, as a client once insured her legs in 2004. The catch though is that one of her legs was deemed less valuable than the other, due to some scarring. Man, even supermodels can’t catch a break! Lloyd’s of London is one company known for assisting on celebrity insurance policies – they’ve been at it since the 1930s!

2) Alien Abduction Insurance

The truth is out there, and so are insurance policies for those who think they may have to worry about close encounters of the fourth kind. Alien abduction stories must have been at an all-time high in the late 80s to mid-90s, because that’s when a lot of these policies seem to have cropped up. Getting this insurance policy for yourself will set you back only about $10 USD, and if you can prove that you were indeed partying in a spaceship where no man has gone before, you can claim “$1 a year for the next ten million years”.

3) Mosquito Bite Insurance

Hey, that’s us! We’ve got a spot on this list too, blame the mosquitoes. Anyone in Malaysia will know the perils of being surrounded by mosquitoes. It makes matters worse that mosquitoes can infect humans with many viruses and diseases. PolicyStreet recognizes this, and we strive to protect you in the event that you are diagnosed with Dengue Fever or Zika Virus. You will need to provide the relevant documentation to be eligible. Our Mosbite Insurance is currently the ONLY dengue-specific cover in the market to date!

4) Chimpanzee Insurance

Who says insurance policies are for man alone? Lloyds makes the list once again, for another bizarre policy concerning a chimpanzee. In the late 19th century, the owner of the aforementioned chimp took out an insurance policy that would require payment when the animal died. This task was handled by famous Lloyd’s underwriter Cuthbert Heath, who not only paid out the insurance in full when the chimpanzee died, but supposedly also had the animal stuffed and kept in his office.

5) Falling Coconut Insurance

This may sound like something out of a cartoon, but the fact is that coconuts are deadly. So deadly that “death by coconut” has its own Wikipedia entry. Alright, perhaps coconuts aren’t as deadly as sharks, but they have warranted enough concern that people want to be protected in case of a coconut-related emergency. An insurance company called Club Direct covered clients for coconut damages. It turned out to be useful, as a client was hit on the head by a coconut, and suffered a concussion. Since she was covered by that policy, her hospital bill was paid in full.

6) Wedding Insurance

Regretting your decision to get married? Well speak now or forever regret it, because if you sign up for wedding insurance and under some unfortunate circumstance the ceremony is called off– there will be a pay-out. It isn’t only applicable if bride or groom decides to ditch, it could take effect in the event of any emergency or accident that impedes the big day. Since so many vendors have a stake in events like this, getting wedding insurance isn’t actually such a bad idea. This insurance also is great if there is any mishap at the wedding ceremony itself, which will definitely be a good way to ensure peace of mind on a very important day. –

Benefits of using your credit card to pay for certain wedding expenses, so should something go wrong you may have the ability to recoup your money!

7) Paranormal Insurance

No, this doesn’t entail a visit from The Ghostbusters, but it most definitely was a real policy. In 2002, a pub landlord at the Royal Falcon Hotel decided he’d had enough of the spooks terrorizing his establishment, and took out an insurance policy with the company Ultraviolet. As the paranormal activity in the location was said to be of a violent nature, the policy stated that up to £1m would be paid if staff or customers were harmed by the any abnormal means whilst on the premises. Ultraviolet’s policy was called Spooksafe Insurance, and also offered protection if a claimant alleged they had turned into a werewolf or vampire. Twilight fans, take note.

8) Clown Insurance

Nothing funny about this, because clowns apparently need insurance too! Performing clowns who are members of Clowns of America International (COAI) will be able to sign up for an insurance policy. The policy is open to performers of vast talents, such as puppeteers, storytellers, jugglers and balloon artists. They will be eligible to be covered so long as they are members of the association. Even assistants can be covered under this particular policy. Though there isn’t much information available on what the policy covers, it does include bodily injuries or property damage.

9) Loch Ness Insurance

The Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie as she is fondly known, is a very important figure in Scotland’s lore and she manages to make her presence felt despite her lack of actual presence. That’s why it’s not at all shocking that a cruise ship company took out an insurance policy in case Nessie ever decides to wreak havoc on their vessel. Though it’s been over 80 years since Nessie made her first appearance, it’s safe to say that those in the city of Inverness would rather be safe than sorry. No word on Nessie’s thoughts though.

10) Riot Insurance

In 2010, Thailand offered insurance to anyone who was harmed in riots and demonstrations in Bangkok. Despite the state of political disorder, the country thought it would be prudent to ensure tourists still visited Thailand. The policy was worth $10,000 and covered any foreigner who experienced loss or damage as a result of the political chaos, natural disaster or terrorist acts in Thailand. The policy also covered loss of life, limbs, sight, permanent disabilities and hospital expenses.

Insurance might be a boring topic to talk about, but that didn’t stop the people from being creative and peculiar about protecting their “assets.” In fact, PolicyStreet has got a pretty wacky new insurance, and that is to protect your dogs and cats!

A Malaysia’s first, PolicyStreet has announced a synergistic collaboration with our insurance partner MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad (MSIG) to distribute the one and only online “Pet Insurance” in Malaysia.

This insurance is an annual premium cover, and starting from RM18/month (including GST), it covers veterinary and surgical bills, prescribed drugs and injections (subject to policy terms and conditions) to help dogs and cats in Malaysia get the best chance at recovery from sickness and accidental injuries.

Other notable benefits include owners being reimbursed the purchase price or adoption fee if their pets pass away due to illness or accidental injury, and burial or cremation costs for these pets. And the wonderful part is this insurance can be purchased instantly online with no hassle. Find out more about this new “wacky” insurance now!
