Road Safety And Pedestrian Safety For Malaysian Children

Tharahni Kalaiselvan / 20/11/2019

Road safety and pedestrian safety is necessary to be taught to the children. Children require an effective adult supervision until the age of 12 to help them safely navigate driveways, cars, streets, and parking areas. Even children who seem to know the features for road safety will not always learn to practice them.

Road Safety And Pedestrian Safety

It is a great first step to always hold your child’s hand when he is around cars. You can also teach your child about safety on the roads including how to be safe in parklots and other places. When crossing a road, for instance, always stop, look, listen and think and use pedestrian crossings whenever possible. Cross at the safest point, even if you have to go further out of your way. Next, aim for the green man if you are crossing the road. And when you are walking around roads and cars, put away your phones and other devices. A good tip to help your children to learn about pedestrian safety and road safety is to describe what you do every time. By doing this, your child can understand why it is important to be safe on the road.

Preventing accidents on the driveway

In driveways and neighborhoods, young children are particularly at risk. Toddlers and school children may not yet understand the dangerous nature of vehicles on the road. They can move quickly and quietly as well. In whatever they do, they get deeply distracted, like chasing a ball behind a vehicle. Even if you request them to, they often don’t stop.

Here are some safety guidelines for the driveway

First, check that no child is behind or in front of the car before moving your car on a driveway. It is important to not just rely on your car cameras and sensors. Also enable a visual check around the vehicle. Next, don’t ever leave young kids alone to play in driveways near parked or moving cars. Don’t ever leave young kids alone to play in driveways near parked or moving cars. Separate the play areas of your child from the driveways. For example, you might be able to fence off the driveway to stop your child from running to it. Besides that, train your child to get used to waving goodbye from inside your home to people. It should be remembered that car parks are close to driveways in that it is very hard for the drivers to see the small children behind their vehicles while reversing.

Road Safety And Pedestrian Safety

Safety inside and outside the car

Use the rear passenger door when your child enters and exits the restraint if possible. This is the safest way in which your child will be taught to always get in and out of the car through the safest door; which is the one furthest from traffic.  If you have an infant or a toddler, when you get them out, keep them safe inside the car. Hold hands with your child once you are out of the car and work together to find out where cars could come from before you walk. Support your child first when you go back to your car, because they are less likely to move out of sight.

Walking and crossing roads for pedestrian safety

In giving children plenty of training on real roads, you will help them develop pedestrian safety skills and road safety skills. For instance, walking with children to and from nursery or school, around the block or to local shops. During this time, you can ask your child simple questions on pedestrian and road safety as you walk together. Instilling such pedestrian safety guidelines into your child’s mind will help them to be cautious while they were on the road.
